Quantum technology advancements in Germany

German researchers and startups are advancing quantum technology infrastructure. The Senftenberg-based startup Quantum Grade Materials is producing highly pure, isotopically pure raw materials, such as Silane-28 and Germanium-73d, intended for use in quantum computers, specialized optics, and new semiconductor components. The company aims to supply a significant portion of the European market using a patented process to transform raw materials into these high-purity substances.

In a separate development, the University of Paderborn is participating in a new collaborative project titled ‘Quantenrepeater. Net (QR. N)’. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with approximately 20 million euros over three years, the initiative involves 42 partners from science and industry. The project focuses on developing quantum repeaters to enable secure information transmission over long distances, addressing the technical challenge that quantum states cannot be copied or amplified like classical signals. The University of Paderborn is specifically working on quantum frequency conversion to ensure compatibility with existing telecommunications fiber networks.
