Germany advances renewable energy with new wind, solar, and battery storage projects
Energy companies and regional authorities in Germany are advancing large-scale battery storage projects to support the transition to renewable energy.
In the Lusatia region, the energy provider Leag has commissioned two new wind and solar parks, the Forst-Briesnig 2 wind park and a solar facility, on former lignite mining sites. To stabilize the grid as coal is phased out by 2038, Leag has begun construction on a massive battery storage facility in Jänschwalde. This project, which aims for a capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours and a power output of 1,000 megawatts, is expected to be operational by 2028 and is described as one of the largest of its kind in Germany.
In North Hesse, local officials in Bad Arolsen have approved planning decisions for a significant battery storage project near the Twiste substation. Mayor Marko Lambion noted that no comparable project exists in the region, and supporters described the move as a breakthrough for energy security and price stability.
