Germany and Bosnia Deploy Large-Scale Battery Storage to Stabilize Grids

In Germany, a surge in plug‑in solar panels and state incentives have driven rapid expansion of battery storage. The startup 1KOMMA5° expects installed battery capacity to rise from 21.8 GWh to 29.8 GWh by June 2025, while the EU added over 27 GWh of storage last year. Officials say the combined use of rooftop solar, heat pumps and electric vehicles, together with battery systems, helps protect consumers from volatile fossil‑fuel prices and eases pressure on the ageing electricity grid.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the company Lager imported battery systems with a total capacity of 1,200 MWh—more than the current combined output of all domestic solar plants. The storage is intended to smooth out solar‑generated excess during daytime, prevent blackouts, lower balancing costs for the system operator (NOS BiH), and ultimately reduce electricity tariffs for households and businesses as the country expands its renewable portfolio.
