Germany and EU implement new consumer and environmental regulations
Germany and the European Union are implementing new regulatory requirements aimed at consumer transparency and environmental protection.
In Germany, retailers are facing scrutiny over compliance with the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act. A sample by the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) revealed that several major retailers, including Edeka, Aldi, Müller, and Rossmann, have failed to correctly display the mandatory electrical waste collection logo at entrances as required by law. While some chains like Lidl and Kaufland met the requirements, others displayed the logo in incorrect locations or sizes.
On a broader scale, the European Union will introduce new mandatory information labels for consumer goods on September 27, 2026. These include the 'Gewährleistungslabel' for statutory rights and the 'GARAN-label' for voluntary guarantees, intended to clarify consumer rights across the EU.
Additionally, the Deutsche Umwelthilfe has launched a campaign alongside members of the German Bundestag to collect old smartphones. The initiative aims to recover valuable raw materials from the estimated 167 million unused mobile phones currently in German households.
