Overview

Germany has failed to meet its mandatory electronic waste collection targets for the seventh consecutive year. In 2025, the country collected approximately 960,000 tonnes of e-waste, a 29.8 percent collection rate that falls significantly short of the 65 percent legal requirement. While recycling efficiency remains high once waste enters the treatment stream, much of the material is lost to residual waste, home storage, or non-certified collection entities.

In response to rising e-waste volumes across the European Union, new regulations are being implemented to address waste at the design stage. A binding ‘right to repair’ legislation, effective July 31, 2026, aims to combat the crisis by requiring manufacturers to offer affordable repairs even after warranties expire. These rules target industry practices such as sealed designs and integrated components that prevent the replacement of batteries and essential parts, seeking to make repair a practical alternative to device replacement.
