Germany and Luxembourg expect heavy motorway traffic during holiday weekend

Heavy traffic congestion is expected across German motorways and parts of neighboring regions during the weekend of August 28 to 30, 2026, as summer holidays conclude in several countries.

The ADAC predicts peak travel volumes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with major movement flowing from the south toward the north and from coastal areas back inland. The end of school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and the Czech Republic will drive significant return traffic. Conversely, summer holidays remain ongoing in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Austria, and Luxembourg.

In addition to holidaymakers returning home, weekend excursion traffic to mountains, lakes, and coasts is expected to increase congestion. In Germany, approximately 1,000 construction sites and road closures are currently active. To prevent traffic from spilling onto rural roads, certain motorway exits in southern Germany, particularly near the Alps on the A7, A8, and A93, may be closed.

In Luxembourg, the A3 toward the capital and the A6 toward Belgium are expected to be heavily affected. While regular truck driving bans apply on Sundays, some exceptions have been granted for essential goods due to low river levels. Drivers are advised to monitor updates from the ADAC and Luxembourg’s ACL.
