Germany and Namibia deepen development partnership

Germany and Namibia have agreed to deepen their long-standing development partnership following a Strategic Dialogue held in Opuwo. Germany has committed €43.8 million (approximately N$822 million) to various development projects in Namibia for 2025. This funding, consisting of grants and concessional loans, will be implemented through KfW Development Bank, GIZ, and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources.

The cooperation will focus on two primary areas: advancing climate-resilient water security, biodiversity, and livelihoods, and harnessing Namibia’s potential for a just green energy transition and skills development. These initiatives aim to support green industrialization, expand trade and investment, and create employment while addressing environmental and livelihood concerns.

Germany has been a major development partner for Namibia since its independence in 1990. Namibia currently stands as the largest recipient of German development cooperation in Africa on a per-capita basis. Previous joint efforts include the rehabilitation of the 437 MW Ruacana Hydropower Plant and initiatives that secured livelihoods for 283,000 people in communal conservancies.
