Germany and Poland Sign New Defense Cooperation Agreement

Poland and Germany signed a new defence cooperation agreement in mid‑June 2026, replacing the 2011 pact. The document, signed by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, outlines joint work in defence policy, capability development, interoperability, cyber‑security, crisis management and defence‑industry projects such as shared procurement and technology transfer, including cooperation on Leopard 2 tank maintenance.

The agreement does not contain a mutual assistance clause beyond existing NATO and EU commitments. It places strong emphasis on military mobility, allowing the transit and stationing of each other's forces, harmonising border‑crossing procedures and developing logistical infrastructure in Poland to support the German 45th Armoured Brigade stationed in Lithuania and other NATO forces. The text was published in the German Federal Law Gazette and is now publicly available.

Polish analysts view the pact as a response to the evolving security situation in Europe and the perceived threat from Russia, while German officials stress that the limited scope reduces the risk of political disputes over defence commitments.
