Germany and Russia face heightened diplomatic tensions

Diplomatic tensions between Germany and Russia have intensified following recent exchanges between officials. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized German politician Johann Wadephul, questioning his cognitive abilities after he commented on a lack of values and political stability in Russia during its ongoing war in Ukraine.

Zakharova defended Russia's historical resilience, stating the nation has repeatedly rebuilt itself after various historical invasions. Meanwhile, the broader relationship between Berlin and Moscow remains complex. Germany currently defines Russia as a primary threat and continues to support Ukraine, though internal political shifts, such as the rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, create domestic debate regarding foreign policy.

German officials, including Wadephul, have urged Europe to maintain its current course in response to Russian actions, coinciding with recent EU sanctions targeting thousands of Russian individuals and entities.
