Germany-Russia diplomatic tensions

Diplomatic relations between Germany and Russia have experienced heightened tension following personal criticisms exchanged between officials. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova questioned the cognitive abilities of German politician Johann Wadephul after he commented on Russia’s political stability and values during the war in Ukraine.

As the relationship remains strained, Russia has addressed issues regarding media access and diplomatic presence. Zakharova stated that while Russia remains open to media outlets to prevent the spread of anti-Russian information, exceptions are made for individuals labeled as extremists. She specifically identified Michael Martens of the ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ as an ‘open extremist’ subject to an international warrant.

Additionally, following the closure of the Russian House in Berlin and a consulate in Bonn due to the cancellation of an intergovernmental agreement by Germany, Russia has transitioned its humanitarian and cultural work to a remote format, though it expressed intent to seek new forms of engagement in the future.
