Germany Announces 2026 Awards for Early Education and Loneliness Projects

The German Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, together with the Deutsche Kinder‑und Jugendstiftung and the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), has opened applications for the German Kita Prize 2026. The competition includes the DGB supplemental prize for "Attractiveness of Work" aimed at improving conditions for early‑education staff. Applicants must have attained nominated status for the Kita prize, and submissions are due by 20 March 2026. Prize money ranges from €25,000 to €10,000, with an additional €4,000 DGB award. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 2026 in Berlin.

In parallel, the first German Gemeinsamkeitspreis 2026 is being launched to recognise projects that combat loneliness and foster social cohesion. The prize, administered by the Federal Ministry together with the Kompetenznetz Einsamkeit under the patronage of Minister Karin Prien, offers four categories – municipal/public institutions, civil‑society initiatives, business and workplace programmes, and outreach to hard‑to‑reach groups. Applications close on 16 August 2026, with total prize funds of €25,000 distributed as €3,000, €2,000 and €1,250 per rank. Winners will be notified by 1 November 2026, and the award ceremony will take place on 2 December 2026 in Berlin.
