Germany apple harvest and market trends
Germany is seeing a significant shift in the fruit market as the new harvest season begins. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, apple production is expected to rise by over 40 percent, reaching between 24,000 and 25,000 tons. This region maintains a strong profile in sustainable agriculture, with nearly 90 percent of its 1,546 hectares of apple cultivation being organic. Most of this harvest is intended for processing into juice, pulp, or dried fruit rather than for fresh consumption.
Despite recent summer heat and drought, consumer prices for apples in Germany have dropped by approximately 10 percent compared to last year, averaging 2.20 euros per kilogram in late August. This price decrease is attributed to the ongoing marketing of the 2025 harvest, which has kept supply high. However, farmers are facing economic pressure due to high storage costs and delayed marketing by retailers.
Climate change is also reshaping regional agriculture. In North Rhine-Westphalia, extreme summer heat and water deficits have caused a polarization in crop yields. While grain harvests like winter barley have remained strong, other crops such as corn, potatoes, and sugar beets have faced significant losses. The changing climate is also encouraging the cultivation of southern fruits, including apricots, nectarines, peaches, and even grapes and olives, in traditionally cooler regions.
