European fruit yield and market fluctuations
Overview
In 2026, European fruit markets experienced divergent trends in yields and stocks. In Germany, the apple harvest was projected to reach approximately 934,000 tons, roughly 5.4 percent below the ten-year average. This decline was attributed to extreme weather conditions, including recurring heatwaves, persistent drought, hail damage, and sunburn.
By late August, German apple prices had dropped by 10 percent compared to the previous year, with consumers paying an average of 2.20 Euro per kilogram. This price decrease was attributed to a large supply of apples still being marketed from the 2025 harvest. While consumers benefited from lower costs, producers faced economic difficulties; Georg Boekels of the Provinzialverband Rheinischer Obst- und Gemüsebauer noted that farmers are bearing high storage costs as retailers hold existing stock.
Regional variations within Germany have emerged as the new harvest season begins. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, apple production is expected to rise by over 40 percent, reaching between 24,000 and 25,000 tons. This region maintains a strong profile in sustainable agriculture, with nearly 90 percent of its apple cultivation being organic, primarily intended for processing into juice, pulp, or dried fruit.
Climate change continues to reshape regional agriculture. In North Rhine-Westphalia, extreme summer heat and water deficits have caused a polarization in crop yields. While grain harvests have remained strong, crops such as corn, potatoes, and sugar beets have faced significant losses. The changing climate is also encouraging the cultivation of southern fruits, including apricots, nectarines, peaches, grapes, and olives, in traditionally cooler regions.
Plum prices also declined by nearly 10 percent, partly due to competition from Southeast European imports. In France, pear stocks were 59 percent higher than the previous year, while French apple stocks remained 10 percent above the five-year average.
