Germany arrests Ukrainian national suspected of Russian espionage

German federal prosecutors have arrested a 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen, identified as Vadym Y., in the Brandenburg region on suspicion of spying for Russian intelligence. Authorities allege the suspect has been in contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025.

The investigation suggests the suspect gathered military intelligence concerning the production of armored vehicles, ammunition, and explosives. He also allegedly targeted personnel and military facilities located at sites intended to secure NATO's eastern flank. While some information was reportedly sourced from public records, prosecutors state the suspect specifically targeted individuals within the European defense industry to obtain sensitive data.

The arrest, carried out by the Federal Criminal Police Office based on findings from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, occurs amid heightened warnings regarding Russian hybrid warfare and sabotage activities in Germany.
