Germany: Asset limits and eligibility for basic security and BAföG
In Germany, individuals applying for basic security (Grundsicherung) are permitted to retain a certain amount of assets, known as protected assets (Schonvermögen), to cover unexpected expenses or personal reserves.
For basic security in old age or in cases of permanent full incapacity to work, single individuals may generally keep up to 10,000 euros in liquid assets. For married couples or partners living together, this protected amount typically increases to 20,000 euros. This limit applies to the total sum of all liquid assets, including checking accounts, savings accounts, cash, and certain securities, rather than to each individual account.
Regarding student benefits, there are specific regulations concerning the simultaneous receipt of BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act) and basic security. While BAföG is an income-dependent benefit for students and pupils from the 10th grade, certain exceptions allow students to apply for basic security if they are not eligible for BAföG. Eligibility for basic security requires the applicant to be at least 15 years old, reside in Germany, and demonstrate a need for assistance.
