German social security and asset protection regulations

Overview

Germany maintains specific regulations regarding asset protection and social security eligibility.

Under debt protection rules effective from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, pensioners are granted increased attachment limits (Pfändungsfreigrenzen). A pensioner without legal maintenance obligations is entitled to a protected net monthly amount of up to 1,589.99 euros. For those with dependents, this threshold increases, reaching approximately 2,187 euros for one dependent, with further increments for additional dependents. While direct seizures through the German Pension Insurance ensure the protected portion is paid to the individual, bank account seizures (Kontopfändung) may not automatically protect these funds, potentially leading to account freezes.

Additionally, individuals applying for basic security (Grundsicherung) in old age or due to incapacity to work may retain protected assets (Schonvermögen). Single individuals can generally keep up to 10,000 euros in liquid assets, while the limit for married couples or partners is typically 20,000 euros. Regarding student support, certain exceptions allow students who are ineligible for BAföG to apply for basic security, provided they meet residency and age requirements.
