Austria and Germany see rising unemployment in July 2026
In July 2026 Austria’s labour market continued to weaken. In Niederösterreich the Arbeitsmarktservice recorded 45,778 job‑seekers, a 5.6 % rise over the previous year and a national unemployment rate of 6.9 %. The Steiermark region reported 40,871 unemployed, up 3.7 % year‑on‑year, while the overall Austrian unemployment rate has risen for the third consecutive year.
Germany also posted higher joblessness. The Federal Employment Agency’s seasonally adjusted figures showed an increase of 6,000 unemployed, bringing the total to 3.007 million and the unemployment rate to 6.4 %. Without seasonal adjustment the rise was 27,700. In the Recklinghausen district the number of unemployed rose 2.6 % to 28,894, lifting the local rate to 8.7 %. Hessen reported 215,000 unemployed in July, 6,700 more than the month before, and a trade‑group warned that higher minijob taxes could endanger hundreds of thousands of part‑time jobs.
