July 2026 unemployment climbs in Austria and Germany
In July 2026 the unemployment rate rose to 6.9 % in Austria and to 6.4 % in Germany, each reporting a seasonally adjusted total of about 3.0 million jobless people – an increase of roughly 6 000 in Austria and 6 000 in Germany compared with the previous month. In Austria, the regional surge was strongest in Vorarlberg where the number of jobseekers rose 8.5 % to 10 555, and in Niederösterreich where unemployment reached 45 778, a 5.6 % increase. In Germany, the Recklinghausen district recorded 28 894 unemployed, a 2.6 % rise and an 8.7 % unemployment rate. The German engineering and IT labour market showed a historic peak of 58 392 unemployed specialists in the fourth quarter of 2025, a 16.7 % year‑on‑year increase, while open positions fell 18.2 % to 96 760. Analysts from the VDI warned that despite the high joblessness, long‑term demand for technical expertise remains strong, driven by infrastructure, energy transition and digitalisation projects. The Austrian labour office (AMS) and the German Federal Employment Agency both noted that the rise marks the third consecutive year of increasing unemployment, with sectoral pressures from weak international demand, high energy and wage costs, and a slowdown in the automotive supply chain.
