Germany becomes net electricity exporter in Q1 as wind power drives surplus

Germany returned to being a net electricity exporter in the first quarter, exporting about 2.5 TWh more than it imported—the first net export since the fourth quarter of 2023. The Federal Network Agency reported exports of 17.9 TWh and imports of 15.3 TWh, driven largely by lower wholesale prices in Germany compared with neighbouring markets. Austria was the largest importer, while exports to Denmark and Norway saw the biggest increases; deliveries to France fell by roughly half. Onshore wind accounted for 57 % of the exported electricity, making renewables the dominant source. Nuclear power also contributed the largest share among individual fuels, and renewable shares rose to 50 % of imports as well.
