Germany bicycle industry faces revenue and employment decline

The German bicycle industry is experiencing a significant downturn, characterized by falling revenues and declining employment. According to data from the association Zukunft Fahrrad, employment in the sector dropped by approximately three percent in 2025 to roughly 74,300 people. Total industry revenue fell by about seven percent to 25.2 billion euros, with the retail segment suffering a sharper ten percent decline.

The crisis is attributed to the lingering effects of overproduction following the pandemic-era boom, high inventory levels, and increased competition from China. These factors have forced retailers to offer significant discounts, particularly on e-bikes, which account for over 80 percent of industry earnings.

Adding to the sector's instability, the Dutch Accell Group has filed for insolvency, impacting German brands such as Haibike, Winora, and Ghost. Industry representatives have called for political support and warned that inflation and economic stagnation continue to exacerbate the situation.
