Overview

The global bicycle industry is experiencing a significant downturn following a period of unprecedented demand driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, lockdowns and a shift toward outdoor activities caused a market boom; in Europe, sales reached approximately 22 million units in 2020, with market value growing by 40% to roughly 18.3 billion euros.

To manage supply chain disruptions, manufacturers placed large orders that arrived as consumer behavior shifted due to inflation, rising interest rates, and the reopening of indoor activities. This has left the industry with excessive inventory and overextended capacity.

In France, 2025 sales fell by 6.2% to 1.84 million units, while total market value decreased by 8.4% to €1.9 billion. The electric bike (VAE) sector saw a 16% drop in sales, falling from 594,000 units in 2024 to 507,000 in 2025.

The downturn has extended to Germany, where the association Zukunft Fahrrad reported that industry revenue fell by approximately 7% to 25.2 billion euros in 2025. Employment in the German sector also dropped by about 3% to roughly 74,300 people, with the retail segment seeing a 10% decline. These challenges are compounded by increased competition from China and high inventory levels, forcing retailers to offer significant discounts, particularly on e-bikes, which represent over 80% of industry earnings. Adding to the instability, the Dutch Accell Group has filed for insolvency, impacting German brands including Haibike, Winora, and Ghost.
