Germany bolsters military readiness amid security concerns

Germany is intensifying its national defense preparations in response to heightened security concerns regarding Russia. The Bundeswehr is developing medical readiness plans to manage a potential influx of up to 1,000 wounded soldiers per day in the event of a conflict. This includes evaluating the reactivation of Cold War-era underground medical bunkers, such as a facility in Ulm capable of hosting 2,000 people for 90 days.

These preparations follow an increase in hybrid threats, including drone attacks and cyberattacks on hospitals. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has warned that Russia could potentially attack NATO territory by 2029. As a central logistical hub in Europe, Germany is expected to play a key role in troop transit and medical care.

Simultaneously, the German military faces significant recruitment challenges. Data indicates that a substantial portion of young applicants are being rejected due to health reasons, including obesity, mental health issues, and musculoskeletal problems. Critics suggest that the military's strict medical criteria may be outdated and do not reflect modern health realities, complicating efforts to bolster personnel levels during this period of rearmament.
