Germany Boosts Quantum‑Secure Communication Project While Quantum Start‑ups Face Infrastructure Gaps

The Friedrich‑Alexander‑University Erlangen‑Nürnberg (FAU) has launched the QDD research project to automate quantum‑secure communication by 2029. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with €3.26 million (total budget €3.84 million), the initiative will use large language models to orchestrate Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and post‑quantum cryptography (PQC) across network segments, reducing manual configuration.

A Fraunhofer Institute study of German quantum‑technology startups reports that most firms provide applications as cloud‑based SaaS, with on‑site quantum hardware still rare. The study, covering roughly half of the estimated 20 startups, highlights limited computing capacity, low investment levels and dependence on non‑European cloud platforms, as well as a lack of standards for integrating quantum and classical systems. These constraints are slowing the development of a self‑sufficient European quantum industry.
