Germany urges UN to regulate AI and meets with Russian FM
At the United Nations General Assembly, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for strict regulation of artificial intelligence, comparing the potential lack of oversight to the uncontrolled development of nuclear weapons by private corporations.
Wadephul emphasized that institutions must adapt to AI rather than waiting for the technology to conform to existing rules. He also expressed concern regarding the concentration of AI patents within a few nations and warned that ignoring international law would harm the majority of the UN's 193 member states.
In a separate diplomatic development, Wadephul held a 20-minute meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the UN headquarters. The meeting, the first face-to-face between the two officials in over four years, was described by Wadephul as tense, with both sides disagreeing on key issues. Following the talks, Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova responded to Wadephul's remarks by citing a passage from the Gospel of Matthew.
Wadephul reaffirmed Germany's position as a major supporter of Ukraine against Russian aggression and advocated for maintaining direct dialogue with Moscow to ensure European autonomy in diplomatic matters.
