Germany celebrates traditional orchard culture with regional apple festivals

apple festivals traditional fruit varieties orchard culture pomology regional agriculture

Various regional events in Germany are celebrating traditional fruit growing and orchard culture through apple-themed festivals and agricultural initiatives.

In Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain, the Förderverein Kulturlandschaft Schwalm is hosting the second Schwälmer Apfeltag on October 3. The event features pomologist Lissy Mihaly, who will identify unknown apple and pear varieties brought by participants. To document this regional culture, students from Schwalmgymnasium are creating color illustrations of the identified varieties.

In Bayreuth, the Streuobstallianz Bayreuth and its partners are organizing an apple festival at the Lindenhof environmental information center on October 11, 2026. The program includes an orchard exhibition, juice pressing demonstrations, and guided tours of traditional orchards.

Additionally, the Biologische Station is offering old fruit varieties for order, such as Prinz Albrecht von Preußen and Goldparmäne. These varieties are noted for higher polyphenol content, which may be suitable for some allergy sufferers. Trees are available as high-stems or semi-stems and are delivered bare-root in late November.
