Germany reports strong 2026 cherry harvest
German fruit growers achieved a significant cherry harvest in 2026, totaling approximately 48,500 tons of sweet and sour cherries. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this figure is 7.8 percent above the ten-year average and 3.0 percent higher than the previous year.
The overall success was driven primarily by sweet cherries, which reached 38,900 tons, a 16.2 percent increase over the ten-year average. In contrast, the sour cherry harvest fell to 9,600 tons, which is 16.8 percent below the 2016–2025 average, partly due to declining cultivation areas.
Regional results varied significantly. Baden-Württemberg, the largest cultivation area for sweet cherries, saw a 16.7 percent increase over the ten-year average. Lower Saxony reported a notable 66 percent increase. Conversely, Rheinland-Pfalz experienced a harvest 37.2 percent below its ten-year average. Mild spring temperatures and reduced frost damage were cited as key factors for the high yields, despite summer heat and drought in some regions. Additionally, preliminary estimates suggest a strong pear harvest of approximately 40,900 tons, roughly 7.7 percent above the ten-year average.
