Germany outlines benefits for disability grades GdB 10 and GdB 50

In Germany the Grad der Behinderung (GdB) is measured in ten‑point increments from 10 to 100. While the social ministry generally recognises an overall disability from GdB 20 upwards, a single‑grade GdB 10 can be awarded for mild impairments such as colour‑blindness, tinnitus, certain autism‑spectrum conditions, depression, obesity, allergies, arthrosis, migraine or bronchial asthma, according to the VdK and the Versorgungsamt.

A GdB of 50 classifies a person as severely disabled and unlocks a bundle of compensations. The primary financial benefit is the €1,140 behind‑tax allowance (Behinderten‑Pauschbetrag) that reduces taxable income. Additional support can include workplace adaptations, technical aids, assistance services and, where applicable, social‑care benefits.
