Germany combats illegal waste disposal via apps and investigators

Efforts to combat illegal waste disposal in Germany are being bolstered by both digital tools and specialized investigative work. The application MÜLLweg! DE, developed by Thomas Lennartz, allows citizens to report illegal dumping sites via a website or mobile app without requiring registration. Since its launch in 2017, the service has recorded over 175,000 reports across nearly 9,000 municipalities, facilitating direct communication between citizens and local authorities via email.

In cities like Bonn, specialized waste investigators such as Frank Schaar are working to identify those responsible for dumping household items, furniture, and hazardous materials in public spaces, forests, and near recycling containers. While finding culprits can be difficult, investigators sometimes identify perpetrators through physical evidence like address labels on packaging or eyewitness accounts. Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia have noted an increasing need for road maintenance crews to clear illegally discarded construction debris, bulky waste, and hazardous substances from roadsides and parking areas.
