Germany commits over €8 billion to African Development Bank

The German government has disclosed its financial commitments to the African Development Bank, revealing that it has pledged approximately €8.1 billion in additional liability capital since 2019. These funds are not immediate cash outlays but represent capital that the bank can draw upon under specific conditions.

In addition to the liability capital, Germany has provided several billion euros for various development funds. For the 2027 federal budget, approximately €1.36 billion is allocated within the development budget specifically for contributions to multilateral development banks, though further payments to such institutions are distributed across various ministerial budgets.

The details were released in an official response to a parliamentary inquiry from the AfD faction. The disclosures highlight Germany’s method of financing projects in Africa through international funds and development banks.
