Germany considers blocking AfD from NATO defense plans

German defense officials are considering procedural measures to prevent regional administrations led by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) from accessing sensitive national and NATO defense plans. This security contingency follows recent elections in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD secured 44% of the vote and nearly achieved an absolute majority in the state parliament.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is reportedly working to ensure that any pro-Russian regional government is legally and operationally barred from accessing the Operational Plan (OPLAN). This 1,000-page confidential blueprint, drafted by German authorities and NATO planners, coordinates military mobility and emergency protocols between federal and regional governments during a conventional military crisis.

To protect these intelligence assets, officials are weighing options to reclassify or redact specific sensitive details within the OPLAN before they are shared with regional security agencies. The measures aim to prevent the potential leakage of strategic information to Moscow, particularly as Germany serves as a critical logistical transit corridor for NATO troop deployments to Eastern Europe.
