Germany considers selling Commerzbank stake to UniCredit

High-ranking German government officials are reportedly open to discussing the sale of the state's 12.7% stake in Commerzbank to the Italian banking group UniCredit. This potential move marks a significant shift from previous political resistance to the takeover attempt.

Any such transaction is reportedly contingent upon the two financial institutions reaching a common strategic agreement regarding the future of the combined banking group. While this is not yet an official government position, some officials believe a sale could be acceptable if it ensures a fair price and provides sufficient guarantees for Commerzbank's future stability.

If the German government proceeds with the sale, UniCredit's ownership in Commerzbank could rise from just under 50% to more than 60%. UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel has expressed confidence in the possibility of assuming control of the German lender by the end of the fourth quarter of the year.
