Germany faces budget debates over debt and healthcare reforms

Germany is facing intense political debate over the 2027 federal budget, which includes over 200 billion euros in new debt. FDP leader Wolfgang Kubicki has criticized the plan, warning that the rising interest burden poses a threat to the country's economic stability and credit rating.

In the healthcare sector, a government austerity package has removed the requirement for health insurance companies to notify members of increases in additional contributions. Consumer protection groups have condemned this move, arguing it leaves 58.6 million members vulnerable to unexpected costs. Additionally, proposed reforms to sick leave regulations, including a requirement for medical certificates from the first day of illness, are facing opposition from the SPD due to concerns about overloading medical practices.

Municipalities and regional sectors are also feeling the pressure. Magdeburg is planning significant increases in daycare fees to address budget deficits, while Hamburg's Court of Auditors has warned of a structural budget shift requiring major cuts. In the aviation industry, the ADV is calling for relief from high aviation taxes and more permanent federal funding for air traffic control at regional airports to maintain competitiveness.
