Germany debates strategic state stakes in defense and tech sectors

The German government is debating increased strategic state participation in key industries, specifically within the defense and technology sectors. Discussions include a potential entry into the tank manufacturer KNDS, with politicians suggesting that state involvement could help secure critical technologies and protect domestic companies from non-European investors and espionage.

SPD politician Andreas Schwarz suggested that state participation could be used strategically in sectors like space technology and future fighter jets to ensure access to essential capabilities. Meanwhile, CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter emphasized the need to protect key industries from espionage and suggested examining participation in the insolvent battery manufacturer Varta to maintain European energy storage independence.

Florian Hohenwarter, head of KNDS Germany, has warned of increasing hybrid threats and industrial espionage targeting the German economy. Regarding the company's future, Hohenwarter maintained that a stock market listing remains a long-term goal, envisioning a scenario where the German state acts as an anchor shareholder alongside France, though he noted that a 50 percent stake similar to the French model is unlikely.
