Germany dental insurance subsidies to decrease in 2027

In Germany, statutory health insurance subsidies for dental prosthetics are set to decrease starting in 2027 under the GKV contribution rate stabilization law. Currently, insurance covers 60 to 75 percent of the costs for standard treatments, but these fixed subsidies will drop to between 50 and 65 percent. For patients without a dental bonus booklet, the coverage is expected to fall from 60 percent to 50 percent.

To avoid higher costs, experts suggest that patients should have their treatment plans approved by their health insurance provider before the end of 2026, as the current subsidy rates will apply if the plan is approved this year, even if the treatment occurs in 2027.

For those unable to afford dental costs, a hardship regulation exists. This allows health insurance to cover the full cost of standard dental care if monthly gross income falls below specific thresholds. For single individuals, the limit is 1,582 euros, while households with one relative have a limit of 2,175.25 euros. Recipients of social benefits automatically qualify for this hardship regulation.
