Germany Deploys Troops to Poland to Bolster NATO Eastern Defences

Germany has stationed a contingent of unarmed soldiers in Poland as part of NATO’s Eastern Flank reinforcement against Russia’s ongoing threat. The troops are tasked mainly with engineering work – digging trenches, laying minefields, installing anti‑tank barriers and improving fortifications around the strategic Suwałki Gap between Belarus and the Russian‑annexed Kaliningrad region.

The deployment follows a newly signed defence‑cooperation agreement between Berlin and Warsaw, underscoring a “shoulder‑to‑shoulder” stance. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius described the move as a clear signal of equal partnership, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted the troops’ position near the Russian border. NATO officials stressed the purely defensive nature of the mission, noting that it aims to delay any possible aggression and enhance response times for Polish and alliance forces.
