Germany develops molten salt systems for renewable energy storage

German researchers and scientific institutions are developing thermal energy storage systems using molten salts to address the variability of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Because solar and wind production often fluctuates and does not always align with peak electricity demand, these technologies aim to store excess energy as heat for later use.

While some claims suggest the existence of a single “molten salt battery” capable of storing summer solar energy for winter use, current evidence indicates that research is actually distributed across various experimental installations and projects. These systems are designed to store energy for several hours or longer, depending on the specific design, to help stabilize the electrical grid during periods of low renewable production.
