Germany driver's license exchange deadlines approaching
Drivers in Germany face upcoming deadlines for the mandatory exchange of driver's licenses to comply with EU standards. The next major deadline is January 19, 2027, which affects card-format licenses issued between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2004.
To determine the correct deadline, drivers must check field 4a on the front of their EU card license, which indicates the card's order date. According to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), this date is the deciding factor for the exchange period.
A special exception exists for individuals born before 1953. Regardless of when their current license was issued, they are permitted to keep their existing documents until January 19, 2033. The ADAC estimates that approximately 43 million licenses must be updated to secure, EU-wide uniform versions by the final 2033 deadline.
