Germany to launch 'd-you' digital identity wallet in 2027

Germany is set to launch 'd-you', a national digital identity wallet, on January 2, 2027. Based on the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) standards, the app will allow citizens to store and present official documents such as identity cards and driver's licenses on their smartphones.

Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger introduced the app, noting that it aims to provide real value by facilitating tasks like age verification, contract signing, and opening bank accounts. Approximately 40 launch partners, including Deutsche Post, Vodafone, and various banks, are expected to participate in the initial ecosystem.

The rollout is designed to be voluntary and free of charge. To ensure privacy, data will be stored encrypted on the user's device rather than in a central federal cloud, allowing users to control exactly which information they share during digital interactions.

In a separate legal development, the District Court of Düsseldorf ruled on a dispute regarding a driver's license that had been reported lost but later found. The court determined that if a replacement document was never proven to have arrived, the surrender of the original document can be considered sufficient to begin a driving ban.
