Germany e-scooter accidents rise sharply amid safety concerns

Accident rates involving e-scooters in Germany are rising significantly. Data from the Federal Statistical Office for 2025 shows 16,496 accidents involving personal injury nationwide, marking an increase of more than 38 percent compared to the previous year. These accidents resulted in 38 fatalities.

Younger demographics are disproportionately affected, with more than half of all accident victims being under the age of 25. Common injuries include lacerations, fractures, and traumatic brain injuries. Experts note that the technical design of e-scooters, such as small wheels and a high center of gravity, contributes to instability on uneven surfaces like cobblestones or wet leaves.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, approximately 3,900 people were injured or killed in e-scooter accidents last year. Due to the prevalence of head and facial injuries, there is an ongoing debate regarding the implementation of a mandatory helmet law to reduce the risk of severe injury.
