Germany electricity prices rise significantly for new customers

Electricity prices for new customers in Germany have seen a significant increase, rising approximately 28 percent since the yearly low in June. Data from price comparison portals and the Energy Price Data Lab shows that the average cost for the cheapest available tariff rose from 23.47 cents per kilowatt-hour in June to approximately 30.11 cents by late September 2026.

This upward trend is driven largely by rising gas prices, which are influenced by geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. Because of the merit-order principle in the European electricity market, the market price is often determined by the higher production costs of gas-fired power plants when renewable energy supply is insufficient to meet demand.

Regional variations remain high; for example, the cheapest rates in Ringelai, Bavaria, are around 25.54 cents per kWh, while in Büsingen, Baden-Württemberg, they reach 41.12 cents. Experts suggest that while switching to a new tariff can save households significant money annually, consumers with existing price guarantees should evaluate their current contracts against the shifting market rates.
