Germany energy transition: Bavarian-Swabia sees surge in renewables

Germany is undergoing a fundamental shift in its energy landscape, driven by renewable energy, electrification, and digitalization. The Contentway campaign ‘Energiekurs Deutschland’ highlights key challenges and developments, including the modernization of power grids, the expansion of renewables, and the growing importance of energy storage.

In the Bavarian-Swabia region, the energy transition is showing significant local momentum. According to regional representatives Norbert Wiedemann and Josef Wagner, the area has become a major energy generator for cities. The region's grid currently hosts 165,000 renewable energy plants, 160,000 of which are photovoltaic systems.

Renewable energy capacity in the region reaches a peak of five gigawatts, with photovoltaics contributing four gigawatts peak. Notably, the amount of photovoltaic power connected to the grid in the first half of 2026 has already exceeded the total amount connected during the entire year of 2025. This surge in demand is attributed to rising energy prices and a desire for energy autonomy.
