Germany establishes AI Security Institute

The German federal government, through the National Security Council chaired by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, approved the creation of a dedicated AI Security Institute. The body will consolidate analytical capacity to assess the capabilities and risks of modern artificial‑intelligence models and will cooperate with counterpart institutes abroad to develop common standards for AI use.

The institute will complement the existing role of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), which has handled AI‑related tasks so far. Germany joins a growing number of states that have set up similar entities, and officials noted the relevance of recent international discussions on AI standardisation, such as the meeting in Seoul, South Korea. The council also reviewed legislation on the supply of critical goods and infrastructure to strengthen readiness for crises.

The move signals a coordinated governmental effort to monitor emerging AI technologies and to shape policy and security measures at both national and international levels.
