Germany expands alcohol bans at major railway stations

Germany is expanding alcohol consumption bans at several major railway stations to improve order and security. Starting September 1, 2026, new restrictions will take effect at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, Kiel, and Braunschweig. The ban covers drinking on platforms and in station halls, though consumption within licensed station gastronomy remains permitted. Carrying sealed alcoholic beverages in bags is still allowed.

Enforcement will be managed by Deutsche Bahn security and the Federal Police. Violators may face immediate expulsion, and repeat offenses could result in a permanent ban from the premises. This expansion follows existing bans at approximately 30 large stations, including Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich.

In Hamburg, preliminary assessments suggest that recent restrictions around the main station have already had a positive impact. Local police and residents report fewer drinking groups and an improved sense of safety in areas such as Hansaplatz and Steindamm. While violations have been recorded, authorities have not observed a significant displacement of drinking groups to other parts of the district.
