Germany expands battery energy storage capacity and grid regulations
Germany is seeing significant expansion and regulatory shifts in its battery energy storage sector. In Alzey, Greenflash has installed one of Europe’s largest Sungrow cabinet storage systems, featuring a capacity of 6.183 MWh and a power output of 2.97 MW. This system integrates photovoltaics, charging infrastructure, and AI-based Greencore software to reduce electricity costs by an estimated 37 percent.
In eastern Germany, Fluence Energy and LEAG Clean Power have commenced construction of the Heinersbrück GridBattery. Scheduled for completion in 2027, this project is part of LEAG’s GigawattFactory initiative to repurpose former mining lands for renewable energy and storage. This follows their existing 1GW / 4 GWh GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 project.
On the commercial side, Vattenfall has secured 55 MW of storage capacity through a virtual battery tolling agreement with terralayr. This arrangement bundles eight decentralized large-scale batteries in Germany into a single controllable portfolio, allowing Vattenfall to access flexibility for wholesale markets and reserve power services.
To manage growing demand, the grid operator Bayernwerk Netz is implementing new criteria for connecting large storage and consumers. Moving away from a first-come, first-served approach, the operator will now prioritize connections based on project maturity, flexibility, and the ability to co-locate with renewable energy assets.
