Germany expands battery storage capacity in Brunsbüttel and Wiesbaden

Germany is advancing its energy transition through new large-scale battery storage projects in Brunsbüttel and Wiesbaden.

Vattenfall has made the final investment decision to build a 254-megawatt battery storage facility at the site of the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant in Schleswig-Holstein. The facility, which will have a capacity of up to 1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), is intended to stabilize the grid by storing excess wind and solar power. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2028 and will connect to the 50Hertz transmission grid.

In Wiesbaden, ESWE BioEnergie has broken ground on a lithium-ion battery storage project located near its biomass heating plant. This facility aims to provide 11 megawatts of usable power and a capacity of 30 megawatt-hours to balance fluctuations and peak loads in the local electricity supply. The project utilizes existing energy infrastructure to integrate power generation and flexible storage.
