Germany expands child diabetes support with training network and disability ruling

The GaDiaKi project, coordinated by the University of Witten/Herdecke and funded by the G‑BA Innovation Fund, has opened its first two study centres in Bielefeld and Herford‑Radewig. The programme offers everyday‑focused group training for children and adolescents with type‑1 diabetes, using inter‑professional teams and peer mentors to teach self‑management during sports, meals and leisure activities. It aims to assess how such training improves patients' confidence, safety and family life, and will later expand to up to 40 specialist centres across Germany.

In a separate development, the Social Court in Darmstadt granted a degree of disability (GdB) of 50 and the “H” marker to a six‑year‑old primary‑school pupil with type‑1 diabetes. The child, who uses an insulin pump and requires at least four additional insulin doses daily, needs continuous supervision and a school aide, leading to significant social and psychological challenges. The court based its decision on precedent that severe, daily‑care‑intensive diabetes constitutes a substantial impairment of life participation.
