Germany expands domestic violence shelter capacity and support

In Berlin, a new women's shelter operated by the Berliner Stadtmission has opened, providing 46 beds for women and children, including 16 family spaces. This addition brings the total number of shelters in the capital to ten, offering capacity for 921 beds. Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe stated that the expansion is part of a continuous effort to strengthen the city's support system for victims of violence.

In Sachsen-Anhalt, data from the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Health indicates that women and children are staying longer in protective shelters. The average duration of stay increased from 67 to 69 days last year. Officials attribute this trend to difficulties in accessing the housing market, a lack of affordable apartments, and administrative delays at social and immigration offices. Sarah Schulze, the state commissioner for women and equality, emphasized the need for faster transitions to independent living and more differentiated support for vulnerable groups.
