Germany expands forest management funding and firewood availability

Germany is implementing new measures to support forest management and climate resilience. HessenForst has launched its 2026/2027 firewood season, allowing private customers to request wood from the Hessian state forest through a new digital inquiry process on their website. The available quantities depend on specific forestry offices and harvest progress, with a focus on deciduous wood from forest maintenance and drought damage removal.

On a federal level, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMLEH) are increasing funding for the 'Climate-Adapted Forest Management' program. Starting in January 2027, annual funding will rise by over 50 million euros to a total of 200 million euros. The initiative aims to expand climate-resilient forest management to at least two million hectares. Private and municipal forest owners can submit initial applications starting October 1, 2026.
