German climate-resilient forest management initiatives

Overview

Germany is implementing various initiatives to enhance forest management and climate resilience. At the federal level, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture are increasing funding for the ‘Climate-Adapted Forest Management’ program. Starting in January 2027, annual funding is set to rise by over 50 million euros to a total of 200 million euros, aiming to cover at least two million hectares.

Regional efforts complement these federal measures. In Hessen, HessenForst has launched its 2026/2027 firewood season, utilizing a new digital inquiry process for private customers to access wood from forest maintenance and drought damage removal. In the Saarland region, forestry management at the von Boch'sche Forstverwaltung is focusing on biodiversity through diverse planting strategies. This includes planting species such as alder, cherry, oak, and silver fir to help private forests withstand drought and changing environmental conditions.
