Germany expands missile capabilities to become Western Europe leader
Germany is significantly expanding its military capabilities, aiming to become the leading missile power in Western Europe. The Bundeswehr is developing the ability to strike targets deep within potential enemy territory through the acquisition of various ballistic and cruise missile systems, including American Tomahawk cruise missiles via the Typhon Mid-Range Capability (MRC) systems.
This strategic shift is supported by unprecedented levels of defense spending and a surge in the domestic defense industry. Between 2024 and 2025, approximately 200 new defense companies emerged in Germany, with another 100 appearing since November 2025. A key player, Rheinmetall, has increased its artillery ammunition production from 70,000 to 1.5 million shells per year and plans to invest roughly €30 billion ($34 billion) into arms and munitions manufacturing over the next six years.
Germany is collaborating with international partners, including the United States, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Israel, to procure systems and establish joint production facilities. While these advancements enhance NATO’s strike flexibility and response capabilities, they also raise questions regarding potential military hegemony in the region.
