Germany expands renewable energy with major solar projects

Germany is seeing significant developments in renewable energy infrastructure. The Energiepark Witznitz, located south of Leipzig on a former lignite mine, has become one of Europe’s largest solar parks. Spanning approximately 500 hectares, the facility utilizes over 1.1 million bifacial solar modules to achieve a capacity of roughly 650 megawatts. The plant uses modern technology to capture sunlight from both sides of the modules, feeding electricity directly into the high-voltage grid via its own substations.

In the Thuringia region, renewable projects are also providing economic opportunities. A new citizen-led solar project in Göritzberg features 11,000 modules, representing the largest community energy project in the state. Research indicates that wind and solar installations can generate significant local value through corporate profits, employee income, and tax revenue, offering a potential financial boost to municipalities facing tight budgets and declining trade tax revenues.
